HISTORY OF ROTARY
The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23 February 1905 . Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a service club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth, created Rotary. The name "Rotary" is derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.
Rotary International has grown over the past century and is now an association of over 31,256 Rotary clubs throughout the world, including every state of the U.S. and over 163 countries and geographical regions.
The Rotary Club of Palatine, Illinois is a proud member of Rotary International and received its charter in 1964. Our first president was Dr. Rolley Bateman. The membership of the Palatine Club, as with Rotary clubs throughout the world, represents a broad cross-section of community leaders, bankers, educators, attorneys, engineers, doctors, corporate executives, business proprietors, accountants, realtors, etc. We accept all types of professions.
